Broadband price hikes: how much you can expect to pay in 2025
Price hikes are now more transparent, but they’re not going away any time soon.
It’s become a fact of life that your monthly broadband bill will likely go up at some point during your contract. You can pretty much count on a price hike at least once a year, usually tied to inflation rates.
Until now, that is. Recent regulation means that broadband suppliers must now detail any planned price hikes - in pounds and pence - before you sign a contract, meaning you know exactly what you’re getting into in the long term.
It also means that suppliers are releasing their planned price increases for the coming year, allowing for some interesting comparisons.
Why is there a ban on inflation-based price hikes?
From 17th January 2025, telecoms providers will no longer be able to institute inflation-based mid-contract price hikes. The ban was put into place by regulator Ofcom, over concerns that consumers didn’t have sufficient clarity and certainty over the cost of their services during the course of their contract.
This is, undoubtedly, good news for consumers, but it’s tempered by the fact that mid-contract price-hikes have not been banned completely. Suppliers will still be able to increase your monthly payments, provided they are up-front about the amount of the increases before you sign the contract.
How much are broadband providers raising prices in 2025?
Unsurprisingly, all of the major players will be increasing their prices in 2025, and all are pretty much in line with one another.
Supplier | Price Increase |
Virgin Media | £3.50 |
BT | £3 |
TalkTalk | £3 |
EE | £3 |
Vodafone | £3 |
Plusnet | £3 |
At a glance Virgin Media are promising the biggest increase, but it’s worth bearing in mind that BT and EE will be adding an additional £2 for their TV packages, which could amount to a whopping £5 per month increase if you have both broadband and TV with them.
Which broadband suppliers won’t be increasing prices in 2025?
Sky is the only major provider who will not be guaranteeing price hikes in 2025, although they do reserve the right to change prices mid-contract. The same goes for Now Broadband.
Several smaller providers also promise not to increase prices during your minimum contract term, including Hyperoptic, Utility Warehouse and Zen Broadband.
