What is the difference between BT home and business broadband?

Understandably, businesses require a more stable connection that is capable of handling multiple devices connected all at once, with the network providing a steady signal that delivers the required speeds that don’t falter or drop out.

BT Business understands these demands and provides a service that is more capable of providing what your business needs.

It uses a leased line, known as BTnet, which is a dedicated fibre circuit that is connected from the businesses premises directly to BT’s network.

This helps to deliver symmetrical bandwidth, or at the very least enhanced upload speeds, which is vital for many businesses as it helps deliver optimal performance. 

Many applications run better due to equal upload and download speeds, such as video conferencing, remote desktop access and cloud-based applications, as these rely on a fast and steady upload speed which can be complemented with strong download speeds too.

In contrast, symmetrical bandwidth isn’t prioritised as much so in home broadband as most applications that would be used at home don’t need fast upload speeds such as video streaming and web browsing, both of which require fast download speeds more so.

Can you get BT Business broadband at home?

With that said above, many people do work from home in the modern day and may require the use of some in-office applications, such as video calling. In these cases, it would be ideal to have BT Business broadband at home.

The good news there is that you can get BT Business broadband at your home.

While the offering of symmetrical speeds may be enticing, it is important to note that BT Business broadband is more expensive than home broadband. 

This is to say that if you freelance or work from home for a larger company, it may be a bit overkill to opt for BT Business. 

If you run your own company from your home - say you have a cabin or something similar that you’ve turned into an office - and you have employees working there with you on the same network, that’s when BT Business could be of good use.

Do you need a phone line for BT Business broadband?

No, not all BT Business broadband packages require a phone line installed. 

When browsing the options available to you, the packages will be outlined as to whether they have a phone line or not. Some will list ‘No phone line’ under the key benefits, while others may not mention it, in which case if it doesn’t say anywhere about a phone line included, you can assume it is not.

The packages that do include a phone line will be listed, and will more often than not be a digital phone line.

What is a digital phone line?

A digital phone line works the same way as phone lines always have, allowing you to make and take calls. The main difference is that rather than using a traditional phone line, it’s all done via the internet.

This saves you from having extra cables and wires lying around as the phone supplied won’t need to have a physical connection anywhere (other than the power cord).

Better yet, BT Business provides an app called Cloud Voice Express (VCE) which can be downloaded to your phone, allowing you to use your business number wherever you are.

This means you don’t need a handset exclusively for the business, you can simply have the app on your existing device. But if you do want a separate handset for the VCE app, BT can supply you with one. You can either purchase it separately or you can upgrade to the Unlimited UK Calls plan and get one supplied.

How much is BT Business broadband?

BT Business offers three options for their broadband plans - Essential, Enhanced and Pro.

All three come with numerous options, offering different speeds and packages with and without a digital phone line.

Essential

Essential packages are the most basic plan, but that’s not to say they aren’t worth it. If you have a smaller business and may not require all the bells and whistles, an Essential package may be best.

They can still offer speeds of up to 900Mbps (depending on your area) and comes with a minimum speed guarantee, meaning whatever you are quoted when your broadband is setup is what you should expect. If it drops below that for a certain amount of time, you are entitled to some form of compensation.

As well as this, you’ll also get a range of support and security benefits provided by BT to keep you safe while browsing online.

Essential plans start from £24.95.

Enhanced

With Enhanced plans, you get everything found in an Essential package plus some extra benefits.

Along with the inclusions found in an Essential package, BT will send someone out to set up your Enhanced plan kit for you rather than you having to do it yourself.

As well as this, you’ll also receive a mobile broadband backup router that keeps you connected should your main hub go down. The mobile router kicks in if it detects the main hub down and keeps you connected via the most local EE 4G network.

Enhanced plans start from £34.95.

Pro

Pro plans are the top-of-the-range plans, offering the best benefits which includes everything from both Essential and Enhanced packages plus more.

With a Pro plan, you can ensure your business is always connected, with WiFi booster discs included to allow for your broadband to stretch even further.

And should your connection ever go down, you’ll have the privilege of next day fault fixes, so you won’t have to spend any time wondering when someone will come to fix the line.
